The Contributory Parent visas (subclass 173 and subclass 143) enable parents whose children are Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens, to live in Australia. The subclass 173 visa is a temporary arrangement valid for two years and cannot be renewed. Applicants may transition to the subclass 143 visa within two years of their stay on the 173 visa to secure permanent residency in Australia.

For these visa applications, the sponsor must be the applicant’s child living in Australia. If the child is below 18 years old, sponsorship can also be provided by:

  • The child’s spouse, who should be at least 18 years old and a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen
  • A relative or guardian of the child
  • A relative or guardian of the child’s spouse, provided the spouse is not yet 18 but is a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen
  • A community organisation

Note: In cases where a community organisation acts as the sponsor, the immigration department demands clear evidence of the relationship with the applicant or a written commitment from the organisation’s senior representative to support the applicant(s) once they arrive in Australia.
