Contributory Parent visa (subclass 173 and 143)

The Contributory Parent visa (subclass 173 and 143) allows parents to reside in Australia if their child is an Australian citizen, a permanent resident, or an eligible New Zealand citizen. The subclass 173 visa is temporary, permitting parents to stay in Australia for up to two years. This visa cannot be renewed or extended. However, within two years of holding the subclass 173 visa, parents may apply for the subclass 143 visa to obtain permanent residency in Australia.

Applicants for these visas must have a sponsorship from their child who resides in Australia. If the child is under 18 years old, the sponsorship can alternatively come from:

  • The child’s spouse, provided they are 18 years or older and are a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen
  • A guardian or relative of the child
  • A guardian or relative of the child’s spouse, if the spouse is under 18 but is a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen
  • A community organisation

Note: If a community organisation is the sponsor, the immigration department requires solid proof of the relationship with the applicant or a written agreement from a senior representative of the organisation, confirming their support for the applicant(s) upon their arrival in Australia.

As a holder of the contributory parent 173 visa, you are entitled to:

  • Travel to and from Australia repeatedly for five years from the visa grant date

 

Qualification Requirements

For Subclass 173

  • Your child must be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or an eligible New Zealand citizen.
  • Your child must have resided in Australia legally for a minimum of 2 years.
  • You need a sponsor.
  • You must pass the balance of family test.
  • You must fulfill health and character requirements.

For Subclass 143

  • You must hold a Contributory Parent (Temporary) (subclass 173) visa.
  • You must comply with all conditions associated with the temporary contributory parent visa (subclass 173).

 

Documentation for Relationship Verification (Subclass 143 and 173 Visas)

Required certified copies include:

  • Birth certificates to prove date of birth
  • A family register showing family ties
  • Marriage certificates (if the sponsor is the spouse of a child)
  • Guardianship documents (if the sponsor is the guardian of a child)
  • Other valid documents that confirm the relationship between the child and the sponsor

For sponsors that are community organizations, the following is required:

  • Registration certificate of the organization
  • Proof of authorization for a representative to act on the organization’s behalf, such as a board or management committee’s authority
  • Proof of financial capability to support the applicant upon their arrival in Australia

 

Family Members Included in the Visa Application

The following family members can be included in your visa application:

  • Your spouse
  • Children or stepchildren of you or your spouse

 

Health and Background Checks

Every applicant and their dependent family members are required to:

  • Undergo medical examinations within a year before submitting the visa application, as part of the health prerequisites
  • Obtain a police clearance certificate from every country where you have resided for over 12 months during the last decade

 

Australian Values Statement

If you are over the age of 18, you are required to sign an Australian values statement. This is to confirm your commitment to adhering to Australian laws.

 

Outstanding Debts to the Australian Government

You must not have any outstanding debts to the Australian government, or you must have made arrangements to repay them before your visa can be granted.
