Applicants for these visas must have a sponsorship from their child who resides in Australia. If the child is under 18 years old, the sponsorship can alternatively come from:

• The child’s spouse, provided they are 18 years or older and are a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen
• A guardian or relative of the child
• A guardian or relative of the child’s spouse, if the spouse is under 18 but is a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen
• A community organisation

Note: If a community organisation is the sponsor, the immigration department requires solid proof of the relationship with the applicant or a written agreement from a senior representative of the organisation, confirming their support for the applicant(s) upon their arrival in Australia.

Advantages of Holding the Visa

As a holder of the contributory parent 173 visa, you are entitled to:

• Reside, study, and work in Australia for two years

Qualification Requirements

For Subclass 173

• Your child must be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or an eligible New Zealand citizen.
• Your child must have resided in Australia legally for a minimum of 2 years.
• You need a sponsor.
• You must pass the balance of family test.
• You must fulfill health and character requirements.

For Subclass 143

• You must hold a Contributory Parent (Temporary) (subclass 173) visa.
• You must comply with all conditions associated with the temporary contributory parent visa (subclass 173).

• Birth certificates to prove date of birth
